Physalis, also known as Cape Gooseberry, grows in the Peruvian highlands. As the generic name, Physalis Peruviana, already illustrates, it is a plant native to Peru, where it thrives particularly well. The fruit is encased in a green calyx until it ripens, which dries up as the fruit ripens, enclosing it like a thin paper skin. Physalis berries are popular for desserts because of their delicious flavor, but also because of their high nutritional content.
